If you are looking for an entirely different experience in London why not visit the Fan Museum in Greenwich.
The Fan Museum is another great example of the originality of London museums. The museum is set in two grade II listed buildings dating from the 1720s that have been sensitively restored to their original grandeur in order to exhibit these wonderful items in suitably lavish surroundings.
The museum details the history and social context of each of its collections taking into account the pieces in terms of both status and practical uses. Used for purposes of ceremony and simply to accessorise, their functions have changed many times throughout history.
The pieces on permanent display are intricate and beautiful works of craftsmanship – you can learn how such artefacts were crafted according to the time period and even enjoy a walk around the Japanese Garden of tranquillity afterwards. This Greenwich Museum also contains a permanent collection of 3,500 fans and the superb Hélène Alexander collection.
Just one of many unique Greenwich attractions, this London museum provides enough interest for a day of learning or as part of a day in this World Heritage Site.
If you are in the area why not pay a visit to the National Maritime Museum – London Pass holders are entitled to a free souvenir visitor’s guide.
